Self help groups for stammering
In recent years a number of self help groups for stuttering and stammering have been formed in various areas around the UK. This can
only be a good thing and I personally hope that even more self help groups can be set up.
I had a stammer for eighteen years, from the age of four to the age of twenty-two. I would have loved to have joined such a group
during this stage of my life, just to be able to talk and discuss what I was going through, with people who could fully understand, would
have been very beneficial to me.
It would have also enabled me to learn about the latest treatments for stammering.
Back in the day when I had a stammer, which is fully twelve years ago now, these such groups were not around, or at least I had not
heard of them. For me the only help or therapy for stammering seemed to be via the local speech therapists.
I did attend speech therapy but for various reasons did not find it particularly helpful for me; well my stammer actually became worse.
I am partly to blame for this lack of progress as I did not really attend these sessions with the right attitude.
I was always thinking in a negative way, believing that the speech therapy sessions would not work and that the speech therapists would
not be able to understand what I was going through due to the fact that they had not had a stammer themselves.
This again is where attending a self help group would have been ideal for me, at this time.
The self help group may not be able to provide a cure for a persons stammer however will be able to provide vital support.
