Stuttering Therapist
I attended speech therapy for fourteen years before I finally gave up on this form of stuttering treatment.
I have nothing against the speech therapists themselves; the majority of them were lovely people. I did in fact learn quite a lot from
them but at the end of the day it was quite clear that they would not be able to help me to overcome the stutter.
My parents brought me up to only accept the best in life and therefore the fact that the speech therapists were unable to offer me a
chance of fluency meant that the therapy was ultimately unsuccessful in my opinion.
It is a bit like a person who smokes cigarettes and had decided that they want to quit.
They attend smoking cessation classes for fourteen years, they learn a great deal but at the end of it are not only still smoking, but
are now smoking even more per day.
I believe it would be a worthwhile idea to create a new form of speech therapist, one that specialises in stuttering, they could be
known as a stuttering therapist or stuttering speech therapist.
At the moment it is as if the speech therapists have to learn “a little about a lot”, there are a large number of different types of
speech impediment.
I would have had a much greater confidence and belief in the treatment that was on offer if I was aware that the therapist had
specialised in stuttering.
In my experience it was as if the speech therapists had absolutely no idea as to what it was like to live life with a stutter
etc.
I am hoping that by writing this article that somebody high up, in the powers that be, might just change the system.
