Stuttering and employment or at work
I decided, much to the annoyance of my parents, to leave the education system at the age of sixteen. This was not because I found the work
hard but purely due to the fact that I had a stutter.
I could not cope with the seemingly constant abuse and bullying from my so called classmates. These people were not mates, they were a
constant thorn in my side and I could not wait to leave the school and them behind.
I then had the difficult task of trying to gain employment. I had no idea of what I wanted to do and basically needed to find a position
where I would not be required to talk a lot.
Stuttering eliminates so many opportunities for people and despite attending regular speech therapy for my own stutter, I was unable to
achieve fluency until I was in my early twenties.
The interview process in attempting to find this first career position was just a nightmare. I like a lot of people who stutter, found it
difficult to speak under pressure and boy did I feel under pressure at these interviews.
It took me around six months to achieve success in gaining employment, I am sure the fact that I had a stutter made this period longer than
it should have been.
I received many battle scars along the way and shed a few tears of stuttering frustration. I was to work for an insurance company at their
lowest level, it seemed the ideal starting position but things were not to turn out as I had expected.
The job itself was fine but I found it very difficult to mix with some of my colleagues. I had expected the workplace to be a much more
mature place than school but I was wrong. I still received mocking from various people who at times would even pretend that they had a
stutter.
This horrible stutter made the first six years of my working life into one huge struggle. I met some very understanding people in that time
and of course a few very nasty people. Thankfully the nasty people were in the minority.
