Therapy for stuttering/stammering – Can you overcome a stutter?
I am often asked questions such as; what can I do to cure my stutter? How long will it take for me to achieve fluency? Is there a cure
for stuttering? Which are the best forms of therapy for stuttering? In this article I will be attempting to write the answers to these
questions.
What can I do to cure my stutter/stammer?
There are number of different types of treatment for stuttering or stammering including a self-help audio book, an e-book, a DVD and a
one-to-one speech course. Which, if any, people decide to try should depend on their own personal circumstances.
I, personally, did not find any benefit from attending traditional speech therapy classes. This does not mean that they would not help
other people though; we are, of course, all different at the end of the day.
How long will it take for me to achieve fluency?
On average it takes people three to four months to achieve total fluency. This is as long as they have put in the required
effort/practice from whichever type of therapy they have taken.
Is there a cure for stuttering?
This is a question that I asked a speech therapist when I was about fourteen years of age. He answered the question with a negative, I
am now fluent! End of.
Which are the best forms of therapy for stuttering?
As per a previous answer, the type of therapy for stuttering people choose will be dependent on their own personal
circumstances.
