Stuttering and being questioned by the
policeWhen I was eighteen years of age I had my
first and only experience of being questioned by the police. I
was on the way home from a house party and it was around two
o'clock in the morning. I lived only a few minutes away from
where the house party was held and therefore decided to walk
home, despite how late it was.
As I was walking a police car drove past and screeched to a
halt. Two policeman got out of the car and approached me, I was
soon being bombarded with a barrage of questions, they
basically wanted to know why I was out so late at night.
Looking back I am not really surprised that they probably
thought I was up to no good.
Despite the fact that I knew that I had done nothing wrong, I
soon became very nervous and for some reason, very worried. I
found it extremely difficult to speak any word fluently and
these policeman saw my stutter at its very worse.
I am convinced to this day that they must have then believed
that I had done something wrong but to be fair to them they
reacted very well to the situation. They attempted to calm me
down and I told them that about the fact that I had a
stuttering problem. I was even lucky enough to be given a lift
home from them.
I felt really low when I got home and was well aware that these
policeman would have a great laugh about the situation for many
months to come.
For the next few years I made sure that I kept away from any
form of trouble. I did not ever want to be questioned by the
police again and I certainly did not want to ever have to
appear in court.
